This Wednesday morning, the second day of the ministerial meeting on irregular migration progresses in Panama, in which authorities from more than 20 countries in the region participate.
The President of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, stated at the beginning of the meeting through a video that irregular migration is everyone’s responsibility and requires a joint effort, with coordinated strategies and sufficient resources to anticipate a regional humanitarian crisis of serious proportions and emphasized that Panama has made a great effort to provide humanitarian assistance to migrants who arrive at the borders.
“We have strategically focused on the problem in a coordinated effort by the State, acting immediately and facing the challenge decisively because we understand that we cannot remain content with discourse in the face of a problem of this magnitude. Today I reaffirm the commitment of the Republic of Panama to work in collaboration with friendly countries as strategic allies in the search for joint actions, with transversal policies and concrete actions that promote regular, orderly and safe migrations, respecting human rights”, said the leader.
Once the plenary session is over, the authorities are expected to provide details on the conclusions and recommendations regarding the issues addressed in the area of migration.
On the other hand, for this Wednesday, it is also expected to hold a meeting of security ministers of the participating countries, to address migration and other issues.
The Secretary of State of the United States, Antony Blinken, the foreign ministers of Costa Rica, Mexico, Colombia, Honduras, El Salvador and Ecuador, as well as the vice foreign ministers of the other countries of the hemisphere, participate in the Ministerial Meeting on Migration.
It is worth mentioning that this meeting is the follow-up to a first virtual meeting convened by Panama in August 2021, in which Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Ecuador, the United States, Mexico and Peru participated, and for this occasion Panama expanded the call to include Caribbean countries.
