The prosecutor Silvia Liliana Porteiro Bello announced on Wednesday his intention to request the impeachment of the senator of the Frente Amplio, Charles CarreraThis procedure is based on the investigation related to the alleged misuse of the Police Hospital during the period in which Carrera held the position of General Director of the Secretariat at the Ministry of the Interior (MI), between 2010 and 2017.
The case has emerged after the analysis of a report prepared by a parliamentary commission that investigates possible irregularities in the administration of the MI during those years. One of the central points of the accusation against Carrera lies in the access allowed to civilians to the Police Hospitala fact that contravenes the provisions of Decree Law 14,416. This regulation specifies that the hospital must be used exclusively by police officers and their immediate family members.
A particularly notable case is that of Victor Hernandeza civilian who, after being involved in an accident with a police officer, became paraplegic. Despite not meeting the necessary legal criteria, Hernández was admitted to this medical centre for almost three years, a decision that allegedly had Carrera’s direct authorisation.

She began her career in the Public Prosecutor’s Office after working in the Judiciary, where she worked as a judge in Paysandú, later moving to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Rivera. Throughout her career, she has held significant positions, including that of first instance judge in Cerro Largo and Lavalleja.
In 2011, he received the support of the then Minister of Economy, Danilo Astorito be confirmed as prosecutor, an appointment that was approved by the Uruguayan Senate.
