The Russo-Ukrainian War threatens national food production

US investment in the Mexican southeast

Except for certain sectors in our country, vulnerability persists in the Mexican agricultural infrastructure, the availability of nutrients is a permanent challenge faced by Mexican farmers, Mexico imports little more than 60 percent of the fertilizers

In our country there are hundreds of fertilizer formulators and producers, however, the government, far from supporting them, puts stones in their way.

For fertilizer producers it is a real ordeal to achieve a sanitary registration, the much-feared COFEPRIS takes two years to grant it.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine will complicate access to this key input, which has seen increases of up to 80 percent in the domestic market and is increasingly scarce in the world market.

The director of PROCCYT, Cristian García de Paz, highlighted that only in the first half of last year, Mexico bought almost 30% of fertilizers from Russia and that “If you take into account that Russia is the main producer of nitrogenous fertilizers and the financial and commercial sanctions that the United States and Europe have imposed on it due to the conflict in Ukraine, it is very possible that the global supply of fertilizers will be limited”.

For his part, the president of Agrochemicals, AC, UMFFAAC, Luis Eduardo González Cepeda, recalled “that only last year we imported five million tons which, at current prices, represent the amount of 4.5 billion dollars, that is, the half of what the government initially estimated the construction of the Dos Bocas refinery would cost.”

Despite the importance of this sector, the government has not shown the capacity or the interest to promote the fertilizer industry.

The Commissioner of COFEPRIS Alejandro Svarch goes from emergency to emergency, the health emergency is not over yet and the clouds of Mexican food weakness are coming, that Commission and SENASICA will be the pivots to avoid dependency that the armed conflict causes food shortages in the battered Mexican market.
