Before sanctioning the project, President Laurentino Cortizo objected to the article that ordered an amnesty for the fines imposed on the candidates of the 2019 electoral contest.
The next general elections of 2024, were published today in the Official Gazette, in the new Electoral Code, which contains the reforms approved by Law 247 of October 22, 2021.
The Electoral Tribunal explained that it is necessary to elaborate a systematic organization of the electoral legislation, in the form of a single text, because Law 247, which reforms the Electoral Code, modifies, adds and repeals the provisions of the Electoral Code and introduces titles, chapters and articles to the electoral text, leaving some articles unchanged.
Before sanctioning the project, President Laurentino Cortizo objected to the article that ordered amnesty for the fines imposed on the candidates of the 2019 electoral contest, however on October 22, 2021 and against the popular will, the president sanctioned Law 247.
Among the aspects questioned by civil society were the allocation of seats in the plurinominal circuits, gender parity in nominations, the distribution of pre-election public financing between political parties and candidates for free nomination.
