The rockers who did not give up in the face of the pandemic

Los rockeros que no se rindieron ante la pandemia

Havana Cuba. — Very interesting for lovers of rock, and particularly heavy metal, the book will turn out Do you have plans for 2022?, by the Cuban writer, journalist, editor and youtuber based in Spain Antonio (Tony) González Requeiro, which has just been published in that country by Made in Metal.

For his book, Tony González chose thirty of the one hundred interviews he did with rock musicians from different countries on five continents between March 2020 and October 2021 and that appeared on the Made in Metal YouTube channel.

During that period, when the COVID-19 pandemic reached its peak and confinement measures were more rigorous in almost the entire world, these musicians did not give up, they did not let discouragement and depression overcome them, and they continued creating, rehearsing , recording and planning the albums and concert tours for the day after.

Tony González asked them about those plans and their careers, and the rockers gladly replied that, despite the gloomy situation that existed, they did not give up or allow their creativity to be affected.

The sample of interviewees is large. They come from various countries: the United States, Canada, England, Sweden, Germany, Israel, Holland, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Belgium, Italy, Peru, the Maghreb, Australia and Cuba, among others. And there are from the almost unknown to millionaire record-selling stars of the last few decades like guitarists Yngwie Malmsteen (AlKatraz, Steelers), Paul Gilbert (Mr Big) and Michael Schenker (Scorpions), bassist Paul Ellefson (Megadeth) and the singers Simone Simmons and Sharon Den Adel, from the Dutch bands epic Y within Temptationrespectively.

One of the interviewees is the Cuban Sofía Guilarte, singer of the group Sofia’s worlda kind of alternative rock power trio, which was among the 25 most voted bands in the contest Mad Cool Talent to participate in the Madrid Festival that was held online in 2021.

Thanks to the fact that he is a great connoisseur of rock since the 70s, when he was after the trail of records and cassettes throughout Havana, Antonio González, rather than questioning the interviewees, talks face to face with them, as if they were old , friends. In fact, in many cases, for so long that he has been listening to them, they practically are.

Antonio González Requeiro, 61, a graduate of the Higher Pedagogical Institute of Havana, was a history teacher for fifteen years before going on to work at the Fototeca de Cuba and then at the Agencia Cubana de Rock. Since December 2010 he lives in Madrid, where, in addition to writing, he works as a teacher, photographer, YouTuber and web designer. In 2021, Editorial Voces de Hoy published his novel “La travesía”, which was presented at the Miami Book Fair.
