The rest of the Eastern fault begins to “wake up,” warns CENAIS director

AREQUIPA, Peru – “The rest of the Oriente fault that was asleep in recent days, until now normal in the areas near Santiago de Cuba, is beginning to ‘wake up’,” warned Enrique Diego Arango Arias, head of the Center’s national seismological service. National Seismological Research (CENAIS).

In this regard, the manager assured in a Facebook post that until this Sunday morning, 4,060 aftershocks of the two strong earthquakes that occurred on November 10 were detected. Of that total, about 101 were probably noticeable by the population living near the active zone, southeast of Pilón.

According to a CENAIS reportIn the last 24 hours there were 80 earthquakes of magnitude 1.5 to 3.1 in the Pilón-Chivirico area (Granma), another five of intensity 1.0 to 1.8 in Santiago-Baconao, two more in Imías, of 2.2 and 2.4.

Earthquakes of magnitude 6 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, which shook eastern Cuba this Sundayleft at least 10 people injured and around 3,750 buildings with various damages, according to a government report published the previous week and cited by the EFE agency.

The injuries were reported in the province of Granma, the most affected by the tremors, which were also felt in other eastern provinces and some central regions of the Island.

This Saturday, however, the Cuban regime recognized that the damage caused to homes by hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, and the two earthquakes, totaled 46,400 until the last report, in the six affected provinces (Guantánamo, Artemisa, Mayabeque, Havana , Santiago de Cuba and Granma), as well as on the Isla de la Juventud.

The data, still preliminary, was offered to the official press the Minister of Construction, René Mesa Villafaña, after the National Defense Council that met in the Palace of the Revolution, headed by its ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel.

In relation to earthquakes, the authorities indicated that the certification work is more in-depth and is being done by sector experts (engineers, architects): here 8,612 damaged homes have been preliminarily reported, of which 156 are total collapses and 5,968 are classified as minor damages.
