The renowned Cuban neurologist Néstor Pérez Lache dies

Pérez Lache would have decided to take his life when he launched from the Santa Catalina and Vento bridge, according to numerous reports broadcast on social networks.

Madrid, Spain.- The renowned Cuban neurologist and professor Dr. Néstor Manuel Pérez Lache, considered one of the most influential figures in neurology in the country, died in Havana in circumstances not yet clarified. The news has caused shock in the national medical community.

Personnel of the Central Military Hospital “Carlos J. Finlay” has confirmed death in publications on social networks, in which they express their regret for the loss of an “flagship professor” and a “colossal figure of national medicine.”

According to several publications on Facebook, including the doctor Lucio Enriquez Nodar, Dr. Pérez Lache would have decided to take his life by throwing himself from the Santa Catalina y Vento bridge, in the capital. So far, health or state authorities have not issued an official part about the circumstances of their death.

“He committed suicide, a victim of the same executioner who served, imagine a teacher, a specialist of this size, without water, without light, without medicines, and in total hopelessness, he threw himself from a bridge! The despair of the Cuban people is a lot!

He also reminds the doctor as: “A guide and a mentor whose passion for neurology was contagious. His departure leaves an impossible emptiness to fill in our corridors, but his legacy lasts in the indelible footprint of wisdom and humanism that he left in each of his students, colleagues and patients.”

Graduated in Medicine in 1965 and specialized in neurology in 1970, Pérez Lache obtained in 1986 the degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences. He developed much of his career at the Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery and at the Military Hospital, where he trained generations of specialists.

He was the author of the thissiometric neurodynamic method, applied to the functional study of the cerebral cortex and neuroplasticity, and participated in investigations linked to the spatial flight of the Soviet Cuba-Union.

In addition, he joined the Academy of Sciences of Cuba, presided over the Permanent Court of Scientific Degree of Medical Clinic and received in 2017 the Scientific Merit Award for the work of a lifetime. Several of his publications were recognized with the Annual Health Prize.

The death has raised numerous messages of duel between colleagues, students and patients. Some of these messages have also linked their death with the difficult situation facing doctors and hospitals on the island, marked by the shortage of medicines, structural problems and emotional wear of professionals.
