MIAMI, United States. – Andrea Pérez, the correspondent for the US press agency Associated Press (AP) in Cuba, asked the island’s foreign minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, on Wednesday about the double discourse of his government, which just accepted a $2 million donation from the United States Agency for Development (USAID), but has historically reviled the organization, which it accuses of financing the “counterrevolution” in Cuba.
After Pérez referred to USAID as a “really complicated entity”, to allude to criticism of the Cuban regime, Rodríguez Parrilla spoke for almost 10 minutes, but did not answer the question, did not mention the US organization and repeated what he had said this Tuesday in a tweet, summed up the medium Inventory Project.
On Twitter, the Cuban foreign minister wrote: “We appreciate the offer of humanitarian aid from the United States. The material contribution valued at 2 million USD through the International Federation of the Red Cross will contribute to our recovery efforts and support to those affected by the ravages of Hurricane Ian” .
Neither in his press conference on Wednesday, nor in his tweet the day before, did he mention USAID.
Inventory Project also remembered that “while the US/USAID $2 million humanitarian aid to Cuba for Hurricane Ian was news on social networks yesterday, Cuban TV dedicated its ‘Round Table’ to explaining/recalling how the CIA/USAID finance protests and fictitious campaigns in social networks to overthrow the Revolution”.
“The official of the state propaganda apparatus Rosa Miriam Elizalde blamed the US government for financing an alleged campaign on social networks to attack the Cuban government and ‘try to chaotize the entire society’ after Hurricane Ian,” Inventario said when sharing the video with the statements of the vice president of the official Union of Journalists of Cuba (UPEC).
Meanwhile, in the same official program, Pedro Etcheverry, deputy director of the State Security Historical Research Center (CIHSE), said that “the CIA, using the mechanisms of USAID and the NED, continues to insist, through its campaigns media, in fomenting tensions, in applying more pressure to the cauldron (…) promoting street demonstrations”.
This Tuesday, andhe Government of the United States announced that it would deliver 2 million dollars in humanitarian aid to Cuba for the recovery of communities devastated by the Hurricane Ianthrough USAID.
A statement of the Department of State signed by Ned Price, spokesman for that federal entity, indicates that the aid will be delivered by independent non-governmental organizations “that work directly with Cubans whose communities were devastated by the storm.”
“The United States will work with trusted independent organizations that operate in the country and have a long-standing presence in communities affected by the hurricanes. We are currently reviewing requests from organizations such as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to provide this assistance,” the statement added.
