The rains will speed up soybean planting and stop the deterioration of wheat

The rains of the last days covered a large part of the national territory with maximums of more than 100 millimeters (mm) of water fallen in certain points of the agricultural area after several months without significant rainfall, which will allow the promotion of soybean and avoid further worsening the poor condition facing wheat.

A report from the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA) highlighted that during the last four days, heterogeneous accumulations were recorded over a large part of the Argentine territory and “some were locally significant, exceeding 50 millimeters.”

The largest accumulated was registered in the City of Buenos Aires, with 101 mm, followed by areas of the center-east of Cuyo and the center of the Pampean region and the NEA.

For its part, the situation continues to be deficient in terms of rainfall in areas of the south of the NEA, the east of the Pampean region and the west of the NOA.

In the last days the main accumulated occurred in CABA with 101 mm; in the Rioja town of Chepes, with 90 mm; in Sunchales, Santa Fe, with 75 mm; Villa Gesell, Buenos Aires, with 71 mm; General Pico, La Pampa, with 68.5 mm; Santa Rosa, La Pampa, with 67.8 mm; Formosa, with 60mm; Villa Dolores, Córdoba, with 60 mm; Cipolletti, Río Negro, with 59 mm; Benito Juárez, Buenos Aires, with 57 mm; Río Cuarto, Córdoba, with 57 mm; and Tartagal, Salta, with 57 mm.

In Presidente Roque Sáenz Peña, Chaco, 53 mm were recorded; in Rafaela, Santa Fe, 52 mm; in Pigüé, Buenos Aires, 50 mm; in Rosario, Santa Fe, 49 mm; in the provinces of Olavarría and Junín, 49 and 47.2 mm respectively; and in Santiago del Estero, 47 mm.

The INTA report estimated that “the recorded rainfall improved the condition of the wheat crop in some specific areas”but, in general, the cereal is between a good, fair and bad condition.

“The areas where the crop is most affected and with the highest proportion of lots in poor condition are located in Córdoba, Santa Fe, Santiago del Estero, Chaco and Formosa, while in La Pampa, Buenos Aires and part of Córdoba the crop is going through the stages between flowering and grain filling,” detailed the official agency.

Regarding summer crops, sunflower sowing tasks advanced to a greater extent, and soybean and corn, the latter with less intensity.

For the next six days, especially the weekend, rains and storms of varying intensity are forecast over the north of the NEA, NOA, Cuyo and the Pampean region.punctually on the west, center and south.

The forecast rainfall would be higher than normal for the season in the province of San Juan, southeast of La Pampa, east of Río Negro, south of Buenos Aires and west and extreme south of Patagonia, while the records would be lower than the normal in the rest of the territory.

From the private sector, the analyst of the Grain Exchange of Buenos Aires (BCBA), Martín López, pointed out that the main accumulations occurred in areas of La Pampa, downtown Buenos Aires, the NEA and part of Córdoba and San Luis.

According to López, “this water is very good because there are a few days of high temperatures in the center and north of Argentina and it is necessary that there is humidity in the profile so that the plants maintain their growth.”

In soybean, these precipitations will allow an acceleration in sowing that came with a marked delay.

“These rains allow us to have the first centimeters of the profile with good humidity to increase the speed of implantation. We need it to continue raining so that there is good humidity and also in the fields with wheat and barley, so that second-rate soybeans can be planted later” Lopez added.

In this sense, he remarked that for sunflowers “water is very good because it is in the critical period in the north, while in Buenos Aires and La Pampa it will allow planting to progress.”

Regarding corn, he considered that the rains are beneficial for the late cereal plantations, although they will need more rainfall to consolidate their development.

Finally, in the case of early corn, López highlighted the importance of these rains since the crops suffered late frosts, with signs of burning, and they lacked moisture to begin to compensate for the loss of leaf area that they lost.”
