The NGO Foro Penal and the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD), which brings together most of the Venezuelan opposition, confirmed this Tuesday between 56 and 76 releases of political prisoners. The information comes five days after the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, announced the release of “a significant number of people.”
The director of Foro Penal, Alfredo Romero, reported this Tuesday through X about the release of the Spanish-Venezuelan Sofía Sahagún, who was already on her way to Madrid. Romero stressed that the organization, dedicated to the defense of political prisoners, has only been able to verify 56 releases within its registry, which exceeded 800 detainees as of Sunday.
“The government says there are 116, but it has not published a list of names. The relatives and prisoners remain in uncertainty and in a painful wait,” Romero said in another publication on the same social network.
The PUD updated its balance in
“The release processes must be accelerated so that the suffering of political prisoners and their families who have maintained permanent vigils outside various penitentiary centers finally ends,” declared the opposition platform.
Verification and registration of releases
Both local NGOs and the opposition leadership have taken on the task of recording and verifying the announced releases.
The releases were announced on Thursday by Rodríguez – brother of the interim president, Delcy Rodríguez -.
This Monday, the Ministry of Penitentiary Service reported on “116 new releases”, but without specifying the identities of the beneficiaries or the conditions of these measures.
Vigils
Since Thursday, relatives of political prisoners have held vigils and spent the night in front of prisons – such as The Helicoid (Caracas), Tocorón (Aragua), El Rodeo I (Miranda) and Zone 7 of the Bolivarian National Police (Caracas) – to demand information and the freedom of all political prisoners.
