The Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, stated this Wednesday, November 19, that it is not ruled out that there will be more releases of detainees during the post-election protests at the end of July and beginning of August, emphasizing that it is a policy outlined by President Nicolás Maduro of do justice
Saab, during the formation of a “committee for justice for the victims July 2024” to provide support to the relatives of the 28 deceased – according to official figures – in the demonstrations, highlighted that whoever declares themselves innocent based on an investigation, Since there is no evidence that determines his alleged responsibility in acts of violence without a final sentence, he can be released.
In that sense, he recalled that so far there have been 225 releases where people have received less burdensome precautionary measures of deprivation of liberty. However, he emphasized that if they are found guilty, they will be subject to justice.
He insisted that the NGOs have no responsibility in the legal action that benefited these people, since it was the Prosecutor’s Office that carried out the steps to see if they could be given less burdensome measures or dismissal of the case. In his opinion, the organizations that provide legal advice use these cases to propagandize against the State and ask for money from USAID.
Tarek William Saab pointed out that, of the 190 seriously injured in these demonstrations, 100 turned out to be security forces officials and for this reason, he criticized that no NGO had alerted him.
He noted that the Prosecutor’s Office has carried out 1,192 investigations together with justice agencies, along with 107 medical examinations of all those detained or those under investigation.
