A delegation of members of the European Parliament is visiting our country and held a meeting with Paraguayan legislators. Security and organized crime were some of the points discussed at the meeting.

The president of Congress, Óscar Salomón, the head of the Chamber of Deputies, Carlos María López, accompanied by other senators received the delegation of European parliamentarians who are touring Mercosur, including Uruguay and Paraguay.

MEP Jordi Cañas, spokesman for the European Community delegation, highlighted the meeting with the Paraguayan legislators and the opportunity to learn more about our country in various aspects.

During the meeting, they discussed some of the challenges that Paraguay faces and what are the instruments that can be worked on in the present and in the future to face them jointly, including the field of security.

On this point, Cañas mentioned the issue of drug trafficking, which not only becomes a dilemma for our nation but also for Europe. “Problems do not understand borders, so we have to be able to work together to help each other and prevent organized crime from not only sowing violence and threatening Paraguay’s economy but also its democracy,” he said.

The European parliamentarian commented that it has already been observed how in other Latin American countries organized crime has ended up permeating political structures and collapsing democracies, for which he considers that Paraguay “still has time to avoid it.”
