The United States publicly announced this Friday that the former President of the Republic, Horacio Cartes, and his relatives will not be eligible to enter US territory due to their “participation in significant acts of corruption.” This was warned by the Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, through the figure of the US ambassador to Paraguay, Marc Ostfield, who at a press conference stressed that it will not be “the last appointment in Paraguay”, leaving the door open for many other names. .
After this statement, which described Cartes and relatives as “significantly corrupt”, several deputies spoke out and officially presented this Saturday the accusatory libel against the Attorney General of the Paraguayan State, Sandra Quiñonez. This request will be dealt with in an extraordinary session by the Lower House, this Sunday at 09:30 a.m., as announced through the media.
ACCUSATION
The deputies Hugo Ramírez, Celeste Amarilla, Kattya González, among several others, exposed a 112-page document where Quiñonez is directly accused of poor performance of his duties. According to statements by the president of the Lower House, Carlos María López (2022-2023), the team made up of legislators and legal professionals was working until late at night to complete the preparation of the brief.
Deputy Ramírez, in turn, pointed out that the presentation of the libel constitutes a transcendental day in the political history of Paraguay, since this effort translates into the strengthening of Paraguayan institutions, through a document that decisively declares that there are sufficient merits for Sandra Quiñonez to be removed from office.
“This effort signifies the desire to strengthen the country’s institutions and democracy. Today we believe that Sandra Quiñonez cannot stay one more minute at the head of the Prosecutor’s Office, since legal certainty is essential, which today is not found in the institution, which has been used for a long time as a political cudgel for political opponents and allies» , sentenced the congressman.
CAUSES
On the other hand, deputy González explained that the libel was subject to modifications, this latest version including new grounds in relation to the previous material that was presented in March of this year. «The accusatory libel has a new wording and we have incorporated new causes; there are new facts that merit a political pronouncement in the Chamber of Deputies”, emphasized the legislator.
“It’s 112 pages. The votes are to the extent that people understand and understand their historical responsibility. We are nobody’s babysitters. Right now there are people who are being squeezed by the Public Ministry or by the HC group. You will not be offered a fee or money.
