The proposals that Petro made to the Colombian mining sector

Make a change in the mineral exploration model in the country, in such a way that the search for new resources is oriented towards those basic goods that are used locally in the fertilizer production and in equipment for the energy transition. That was the main approach of the president Gustavo Petro before the mining sector.

Speaking at the National Mining Congress, which ended in Cartagena this Friday, September 2, the president stated that “mining exploration and its profile should have another mining objective, instead of looking for coal or oil. See if there is lithium, more copper, cobalt, coltan, manganese. If there are none, other decisions must be made. Mining exploration should change your mind”.

(See: Ocampo questioned the oil sector and requested more contributions from the country).

And added that those minerals, as a product of the energy transition that must be undertaken with more intensity, They will be in high demand in the years to come.

Let’s look for minerals to fertilize the land. We are linking towards economy of reproduction of life. Colombia is water and minerals. It is not oil or coal, and water means life, and the other the opposite”, he added.

The mining sector also proposed that, in association with Ecopetrol, carry out a mission that seeks to manufacture in Colombia the first large wind turbine, so that it is possible to know what is required to produce those elements locally.

It does not matter that it is more expensive to do it, but the important thing is to know how to do it, or the same with the first solar panels. Ecopetrol and you could do the pilot and move forward because that would bring informed and grounded things about what could be an alliance between the State and the mining sector.Petro stressed.

He also supported the idea of reform the mining code so that it does not revolve around the mining multinational, but rather that the traditional miner must be recovered and isolated from contact with cocaine, since this dynamic and turmoil can trigger homicide rates and can end the economy.

Finally, President Gustavo Petro defended the idea in the tax reform of imposing a new export tax on oil and coal, because it is a way to reduce the deficit with the least possible damage to the people, trying to capture part of the energy mining income to finance it and lower it, instead of making decisions such as using VAT to obtain more resources.
