One proposal that is “on the table” in the dialogue process is to convert the Ministry of Labor into a Ministry of Employment, Labor and Social Security.
This, with the aim of expanding the functions it provides to Dominican society; as well as the creation of the Worker Welfare Institute, which will have a positive impact on the mental and physical health of Dominicans and an incentive to increase formal jobs. The approach was made by the Minister of Labor, Luis Miguel De Camps García, guest speaker at the first Business Meeting of the year, held in Higüey, under the title “Challenges facing the future of work”.
Among the important points to be discussed in the dialogue between the employer, trade union and government sectors, according to the official, are the rights of workers, which, being a stabilizing element, must be respected.
“One of the reasons why there were no major bankruptcies and unemployment in the Dominican Republic during the pandemic was unemployment,” he added. He urged the business sector to present proposals that can improve their cash flow and build consensual transformations that benefit all sectors.
In another order, he valued the efforts made by the Ministry of Labor to carry out public policies that contribute to increasing job creation, without detriment to the rights of workers. He said that together with the Professional Technical Training Institute (Infotep) and with the holding of job days throughout the country, work is being done to design training programs that Dominicans can occupy the positions demanded by the labor market.

De Camps García said that, with the beginning of the dialogue table of the Labor Consultative Council, the commitment of the government of President Luis Abinader to modernize the Labor Code of the Dominican Republic becomes a reality.
