The Government Commission of the Bogota Council approved in the first debate a project that ensures free access to menstrual hygiene products in public schools in the capital.

The initiative will now advance to a second debate in the plenary session of the Council, seeks to ensure that all students in public educational institutions in Bogotá have the necessary supplies for your menstrual care, regardless of your economic situation.
Councillor Julián Sastoque, who promoted the proposal, highlighted the importance of the measure: “Bogotá is about to write a new chapter in history by setting a model for the country in protecting menstrual rights and improving the dignity of menstrual care in public schools.”.

The project includes the distribution of a range of menstrual products, including sanitary pads, tampons, panty liners, menstrual cups, absorbent underwear and pain relievers. These products will be directed primarily to areas with greater economic difficulties and to rural areas, where access is more restricted.
In addition to the delivery of products, the agreement proposes a complete overhaul of sanitary facilities in public schools. The District Administration will be responsible for ensuring that the bathrooms meet the necessary standards of accessibility, hygiene, privacy, lighting and drinking water.key elements for safe and respectful menstrual management.

The project also includes a comprehensive pedagogical component. Educational programs aimed at students, teachers, managers, administrative staff and families will be implemented to promote a proper understanding of the menstrual cycle, related rights and management. The intention is to eradicate myths and stigmas associated with menstruation, promoting inclusive and conscious education.

Although the approval by the Government Commission represents a significant step forward, the project must go through a second debate in the plenary session of the Council before receiving final ratification by the District Administration.
