The Institute of Hydrology, Meteorology and Environmental Studies (Ideam) reported that the probability of the formation of a cyclone in the Caribbean Sea has increased considerably, going from 70% to 90% in the last few hours.

There is an alert in the Colombian Caribbean for the formation of a possible Cyclone. This phenomenon, which could trigger extreme weather conditions, keeps various areas of the Colombian Caribbean on alert, including the northern and central departments of the Caribbean coast, as well as the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina.

Ideam warned that, at the end of this week, strong waves could be recorded on the islands of the San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina Archipelago.

The natural phenomenon called ‘Sara’ generates moderate and heavy rains this Thursday in several departments of the country.

Given this forecast, the population and tourists are recommended to maintain constant monitoring of weather conditions, given the potential impact of this phenomenon. In addition, intense rains are expected in the departments of La Guajira, Magdalena, Atlántico and Bolívar.

Surveillance alerts and precautions for other regions

A surveillance alert has been issued for the departments of Sucre, Córdoba, Antioquia and Chocó, since the low pressure system could indirectly influence the weather and sea conditions in those territories.

The National Maritime Authority has also urged precautions in nautical activities and to limit the movement of vessels due to changes in sea conditions.

Continuous monitoring and recommendations

The Technical Table, which includes various entities such as IDEAM, DIMAR, Aerocivil, the Colombian Air Force (FAC) and the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), will continue to monitor the evolution of the tropical disturbance AL99. The population is recommended to pay attention to official statements and follow the recommendations of the authorities to avoid risks.

The National Government continues to monitor the situation by delivering humanitarian aid in Chocó, Guajira, and other regions of the Caribbean and reiterates the importance of being prepared for any eventuality that may arise over the next few days.
