There are few demands as capitalist as asking to live in order to work. And yet, the radical left has achieved the unthinkable: beating the right in its own court, taking over a strike of informal businessmen who are asking for a tough line against crime.
Obviously, a new Constitution is not going to end citizen insecurity. Only magical thinking could believe that words change all reality. But that postmodern promise of the left seduces thousands and that is what matters, politically speaking.
From the other shore, on the other hand, the right is neither marching nor promising. That is, it does not translate citizen indignation into political proposals. Even more: it demonizes the demonstrations. And as the void is filled, the radical left ended up taking over the arrest. Due to the abandonment of the right, which has even lost its traditional banner of citizen security, perhaps because it believes that the problems of this country are solved by themselves (the invisible hand) or privately (personal surveillance). In the absence of the right, the radical left has come out to defend businessmen and demand a tough line against crime.
We live in “the age of perpetual protest,” as political scientist Devashree Gupta says. Therefore, the only law that prevails is “the law of the street.” And, therefore, each problem is a new demand, a new protest and a new promise. And, while the left offers ‘change’ in the streets, a certain right seems to defend the status quo.
