After the president of the United States, Donald Trump, ordered the deployment of National Guard members in Washington, comparing the levels of insecurity with those of Mexico City, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo rejected that the Mexican capital has the highest homicide indices in Latin America, as the Republican said.
“He (Trump) said something like … first, that Washington was more insecure than Mexico City, which is true,” said the president when consulted directly on the statements of the US President.
In her conference in the Treasury Hall of the National Palace, the head of the Federal Executive asked to project the figures on the incidence of homicides of Mexico City and her comparison with those of the capital of the neighboring country. He indicated that in total statistics, 187 homicides in Washington for 978 on CDMX were reported during 2024, but clarified that while more than 9 million people live in this, in the American there are just over 700 thousand.
Therefore, he insisted that the measurement must be based on the proportion for every 100,000 inhabitants, line in which in Washington 27 homicides were reported last year, for only 10 that were recorded in Mexico City.
Sheinbaum recalled that at the beginning of his management as head of government in 2018, and after the six -year period of Miguel Ángel Mancera, homicides increased to more than 5 daily on average during the first months, but were reduced to indices of less than two daily murders.
Similarly, with the start of the Government of Clara Brugada “it went up a bit, to 2.3, something like that; and now, Clara is doing a very good job, supported by the entire security team, because we coordinate, and is on two daily homicides at this time the average in the city.”
