In the midst of a deep institutional crisis, the congress by 101 votes, in 130, ordered the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo.
The vice president, the lawyer Dina Boluarte (60 years old), assumed the position of president of Peru on Wednesday, being the first woman to occupy that position in the Latin country.
Castillo was dismissed 16 months after taking office. He intended to dissolve the congress and establish a new one. He did not have the support of Boluarte, and the congress dismissed him.
Boluarte will be president until July 26, 2026, until a new government is elected.
The former president was arrested by the Peruvian authorities.
