Pedro Tellechea was appointed this Tuesday night as the new Oil Minister, replacing Tareck El Aissami who resigned from office a day earlier, in the midst of a corruption scandal in the oil industry
Nicolás Maduro announced on Tuesday night the appointment of the president of Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), Pedro Tellechea, as the new Minister of Oil, after the resignation of Tareck El Aissami.
“I met with the President of PDVSA, Engineer Pedro Tellechea, and I appointed him as the new Minister of Petroleum, within the framework of the transformation process that the industry is undergoing. Maximum Efficiency Partner! ”, Maduro announced through his Twitter account.
Tellechea has a degree in Military Arts and Sciences and a Mechanical Engineer. On January 6, 2023, he was appointed president of PDVSA, replacing Asdrúbal Chávez. Previously, he served as president of Petroquímica de Venezuela SA (Pequiven), a position in which he was appointed in 2020. Before that, he served as general manager of the Empresa Mixta Methanol de Oriente, Metor SA; and was president of the Venezuelan Aluminum Industry CA
On February 7, 2023, he published on his Twitter account a photograph with the now ousted Tareck El Aissami saying: “Brother of life and Promotion, 88-93 and 87-92, of the Jáuregui Military High School. United we continue to demonstrate the productive commitment to Homeland; I will not disappoint the trust placed, count on my loyalty and affection».
After assuming the presidency of Pdvsa, Tellechea suspended most of the contracts to export crude oil and refined products, as part of an audit of contracts at the state oil company with the aim of preventing the ships from setting sail before completing the corresponding payments for the cargoes. . This caused Venezuela’s oil exports to fall by 8% during the month of February.
