The European Super League could start in 2025, The president of FC Barcelona, Joan Laporta, said this Thursday if there is an important judicial decision in favor of the project.
“We will have the sentence on the Super League in the spring, that will represent for the clubs the same thing that the Bosman Law did for the players. I would not accept entering this project if it had not been an open competition. Madrid, Juve and other clubs that still do not want to come to light accepted it. The only thing we want to change is the governance model and for it to belong to the clubs, but for UEFA to be at the table as one more agent,” Laporta explained in an interview on the Cadena SER radio station.
“If the resolution is favourable, the Super League can be a reality in 2025. If it is not favorable, it will depend on how the resolution is to decide what the steps to follow will be. The degree of victory will define the degree of what can be done with the Super League,” he pointed out.
The European Court of Justice must rule in the first part of this 2023 on the matter and on whether UEFA and FIFA have abused their power by threatening to expel the clubs and players who have joined the European Super League project.
The general counsel of the European Court of Justice already issued a first assessment favorable to UEFA and FIFA in mid-December. The conclusions of the general counsel are often followed by the judges.
Announced in April 2021 amid general surprise, the European Super League project took only 48 hours to dissolve in the face of the anger of numerous fans and the threat of political measures and sporting sanctions.
FC Barcelona, Real Madrid and Juventus continue to support the project, from which the six big clubs of the English Premier League (Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United and Tottenham) initially involved were mainly distanced.
