The Colorado Party (PC) held its National Convention last Saturday, where the date for the election of the new National Executive Committee (CEN) was defined. This event, which will take place on December 21, is a key stage for the internal reorganization of the party. During this convention, 15 regulars and 15 alternates were elected to form the CEN.
The importance of this election lies in the fact that the new general secretary of the party will be selected from among these members, who must be one of those chosen in this process. The deputy Felipe Schipanibelonging to the group Unir para Crecer, indicated that the presentation for the election is in negotiations. He stressed that his sector supports the election of Andrés Ojeda as general secretary and that a single list is sought with representation of the different groups within the party.
Ojeda was also consulted about possible challenges to his leadership within the PC and highlighted that the party includes diverse groups with strong leadership. However, he stated that the leadership of the party will be unique, under the coordination of the CEN.and that each group leader can continue to exercise their roles.
He stated that internal disputes should not be interpreted as a rivalry but as a natural process within a party with multiple perspectives. Likewise, he stressed that his approach has been to build unity instead of fostering divisions within the PC.
Internal strategies and negotiations
Despite this preference, Schipani mentioned that a non-unique list would not be a problem, since the most important thing is for Ojeda to obtain the leadership of the CEN. He affirmed that his sector has the majority necessary to guarantee this result. In addition, he emphasized that there is no urgency to carry out the election, although he recalled that it is normally held in election years.
The deputy also addressed the proposal of make this election in Januarywhich he considered impractical due to the end of year holidays and the closure of party activities. He indicated that this delay could affect the start of electoral activities and coordination with the government.
Outlook for Vamos Uruguay
From the sector Let’s go Uruguay (VU)led by senator-elect Pedro Bordaberry, expressed acceptance of the idea of a unity list and stated that there is no problem with Ojeda occupying the position of general secretary. However, a sector leader pointed out that there are still details to be defined, a process that will begin next Monday.
A central issue for VU is the representation of its members on the unit roster. If the number of VU representatives is not considered sufficient, the proposal could be reconsidered. In addition, the possibility of implementing a rotating general secretary was raised.
The rotating secretariat and its historical context
The idea of the rotating secretariat has been present in previous debates. In the current period, Julio María Sanguinetti He held the position for four years without rotation, unlike past periods in which this practice was carried out. Bordaberry had promoted this concept when he was general secretary of the party.
Regarding internal tensions, Ojeda addressed the controversies that have arisen in recent days in a press conference. He stressed that he decided to stay away from these deep disputes and opted for a position of peace and dialogue between the different sectors to resolve any differences that may arise.
