This column is addressed to high school seniors and, subliminally, to their parents:
“You’ve probably just returned from your graduation trip, you’re planning your prom and getting ready for the first summer of your lifetime. And at the same time, I want to share some tips to help you choose your career path.
Choosing a career is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. It is not just about choosing a profession that will provide you with financial support, but about finding a vocation that you are passionate about and that motivates you every day. In this context, I want to introduce you to the concept of Ikigai, a Japanese philosophy that can be of great help in this process.
Ikigai translates to “reason for being.” It is the intersection of four fundamental aspects: a) what you love to do; b) what you are good at; c) what the world needs; and, d) what you can get paid for. Finding your Ikigai means finding that point where these four elements intersect, giving you a life full of purpose and satisfaction.
First, reflect on your interests and abilities. What activities do you enjoy doing in your free time? What subjects did you excel at during your school years? Identifying your passions and strengths is the first step to finding your Ikigai.
Next, research the job market. In today’s globalized world, it’s crucial to stay on top of market demands. What professions are most in demand? What skills are most valued? This information will help you align your interests with real job opportunities. And you need to add a detail: Which ones will be most in demand and valued 10 years from now? You need to travel back in time.
Next, think about how you can contribute to society with your skills and knowledge. Careers that focus not only on personal gain, but also on the common good, are often more rewarding.
Finally, while passion and purpose are important, it’s also essential to consider the economic viability of your choice. Find out about average salaries, growth opportunities, and entrepreneurship in the areas that interest you.
But that’s not all. There are other things I have to tell you.
Today’s world is more interconnected than ever. Geographic barriers have been reduced thanks to technology, and opportunities to study and work abroad are increasingly accessible. Here are some key points to take advantage of this globalized context.
Learn languages. Mastery of other languages, especially English, opens many doors. Not only will it allow you to access more information and resources, but it will also increase your chances of studying abroad and working for multinational companies.
Take advantage of technology. Nowadays, there are countless online courses and educational resources available on the internet. Platforms like Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy offer courses from prestigious universities worldwide. Use these tools to complement your education and acquire new skills.
Develop soft skills. In an increasingly automated world of work, soft skills such as communication, teamwork, adaptability and critical thinking are highly valued. Participate in extracurricular activities, volunteering and projects that allow you to develop these skills.
Dear high school graduate, you are about to embark on an exciting adventure. Choosing a career is just the first step on a long path of learning and growth. Use the Ikigai approach to guide your decisions and don’t be afraid to explore the vast world of opportunities that awaits you. Remember that a good choice today can be the key to a full and satisfying life tomorrow.
I wish you the greatest success in your future endeavors. And may your graduation party not only be a celebration of a milestone, but of finding your true Ikigai. With love, P”
