The ports of Palmira without controls against drug trafficking

For years it has been on the front page of the newspapers that drugs would be trafficked through the Uruguayan ports, citing the one of Nueva Palmira, but the governments that have passed and the one that is in force now, have not acted accordingly. The truth is that it has not been possible to discover a shipment of drugs on barges in Palmira, when cocaine has been seized it has been in Paraguay on barges bound for Palmyra ports.

The vice president of the ANP board, Daniel Loureiro, responded to EL ECO that “the Uruguayan State is developing its port control capacity, and a tender is going to be opened for the purchase of three scanners for the Port of Montevideo because drug smuggling is an occupation and a concern of the authorities,” he said.

When asked by EL ECO what will happen to the port of Nueva Palmira, he replied that a scanner will not be incorporated yet, “although one of the scanners is mobile, and can be brought” to the port of Palmyra.
