MIAMI, United States. – The work “An actor prepares for the role of his life”, by the Cuban rolando morelliwill have its premiere on Friday 24 and Saturday 25 February at the headquarters of the Havanafama Theater Companyas part of the XXI Latin American Monologue Festival.
According to the critic Luis de la Paz, it is “a well-thought-out text, which goes in crescendo; dramatically moving; politically motivated, in which an actor assumes a character that will drag him along for the rest of his life and mark him to the point of delirium”.
In addition, “An actor prepares for the role of his life” contains a tribute to important playwrights, as well as humor, tragedy and “a background between frenetic surrealism and everyday reality,” De la Paz also points out.
For his part, the author of the work assures that, with “An actor prepares for the role of his life”, he wanted to summarize and reflect, “on the one hand, the loneliness and lack of understanding suffered by the individual who has worn the mask of himself too long, or too far (…); and on the other, addressing the depersonalization to which, as a people, and as individuals (some more than others) we Cubans have been subjected, under the long night of the tyranny of communism.”
“That we have managed to sustain that identity, no matter how deteriorated it may be, ratifies us as a nation, despite the misfortune and misunderstanding that accompanies us, and is also a testimony to the strength of this true identity. But, not for this reason, we should lose sight of, as much as we have evidently sacrificed in a huge confrontation, against absurd and criminal forces”, Morelli points out.
The monologue is carried out by the Cuban actor Raydel N. Casas (Havana, 1991), who “incarnates the character of Roberto, an actor typecast in a detestable role, which he hates, and from which he cannot get rid of, not even once in the exile”.
Meanwhile, the staging is in charge of the Camagüey-born actress, teacher and director Marcia Arencibia Henderson, a graduate of the National Art School (ENA) of Cuba.
Morelli, the author of the text, is a playwright, narrator, poet, essayist, editor, and university professor. He has published more than a dozen books, and numerous unpublished titles, including several plays, including a free adaptation for theater tables. Rene’s meatby Virgilio Piñera.
