Homicides in the Piura region rose to 115 until yesterday, October 8, according to the report from the National Computer System of Deaths (Sinadef). For the former head of the Piura police region, Colonel Máximo Vargas Hugo, this year will be the year of crime in Piura.
To date, 115 homicides have been recorded, a figure very close to the 116 cases reported in all of 2024, so everything indicates that this year it will exceed that number if urgent measures are not taken.
In January, 11 deaths were recorded at the hands of hitmen, in February 12, March 16, April 9, May 11, June 13, July 14, August 10, September 14 and in October 5 homicides. The attacks by the hitmen have also left several injured.
In this regard, the former head of the Piura police region, Colonel Máximo Vargas Hugo, stated that this situation is worrying at the national level and in the Piura region, whose figure exceeds statistics.
“We are reaching the figure for 2024, it is going to happen (the figure). This is the year of crime in Peru and in Piura. The situation that exists in the country in terms of violent deaths is worrying, Piura does not escape it, there are already 114 deaths. I see with great concern those statistics regarding contract killings, extortion, collection of quotas and other acts that have been greatly exceeded,” accurate.
The colonel added that there are several axes that must be strengthened, among them, police intelligence and criminal investigation that must be strengthened for this fight against crime.
“We do not see security policies that will make this situation reverse. It is worrying. On the issue of prevention in Piura, the authorities have provided vans and motorcycles to the police, but what needs to be improved is to reinforce police intelligence and criminal investigation, not only is having a group of intelligence elements but the necessary logistics and a legal framework that quickly favors the investigation,” he indicated.

Cases of extortion also increase in the Piura region. In this regard, the colonel specified that there is a lack of support, despite the fact that the Minister of Justice announced the placement of blockers in the Piura prison, however, it has not materialized.
“The police in these units must be given a legal framework, it is not possible for extortionists to give you an account number so that you can deposit it, so the police must have that information quickly and the SBS must coordinate with the banks so that the police have access to who is the account holder, etc.,” he indicated.
