This Friday, May 13, the Representative Table of the PIT-CNT met to analyze, among other issues, the conflict in the port sector and the insecurity that the country is experiencing with an “exponential increase in homicides.”
Within this framework, the Representative Table of the trade union center evaluated the possibility of carrying out a mobilization and general strike for employment and salary recovery.
The proposal was approved for discussion in the bases and at the next meeting of the Representative Table a definitive position will be taken on the protest measure, as well as the setting of the day that will be in the month of July.
Port of Montevideo
Likewise, the PIT-CNT analyzed the conflictive situation in the port of Montevideo.
The trade union center expressed, through a statement, that the conflict “was seen coming with the government’s decision to hand over the port to a private company for 60 years, since the agreement signed between the government and Terminal Cuenca del Plata was going to impact job losses.
In this sense, the PIT-CNT highlights that the port union is framed in a conflict for the defense of jobs and working conditions.
The Representative Table of the PIT-CNT declared its “full support for the set of measures that SUPRA has been developing, (among them, the stoppage of activity in the country’s ports) in the face of the layoffs and the salary reduction announced by Montecon, of 150 layoffs direct, but in the near future it will be of the total of its direct and outsourced workforce”.
“We demand that the Executive Branch intervene in the conflict and provide the necessary guarantees so that jobs are maintained, and workers stop being held hostage by the illegal agreement reached between the government and the multinational Katoen Natie,” the workers’ union stated.
