Havana Cuba. — If the government of President-designate Miguel Díaz-Canel could boast of any growth in the coming year, it would be scarcity, shortages, and corruption.
There has been an absence and shortage of food for more than three years. I don’t mean lobster and shrimp, but milk, butter, rice. Scarcity is increased by the diversion of resources, theft, resale, and other wrongs inherent to socialism.
Faced with this situation, and due to the high prices of individuals, the communist bureaucrats came up with the idea, amid populist euphoria, for the end of the yearsell a piece of pork per family below the market price, in order to alleviate the discomfort of the population.
The calculation of the officials was to allocate a pig for eight family nuclei, regardless of the number of members, and each band of the animal divided into four parts. It is not clear if they break the pig’s head or who gets it.
Each piece delivered, regardless of weight, would be charged at 250 pesos per pound. However, the promised pieces of pork for each family nucleus in Central Havana did not reach their destination. And that the neighbors only wanted, to paraphrase Nicolás Guillén, “a small piece, and not a colossal piece, a small piece”, which would allow them to blunt their teeth at their discreet New Year’s Eve dinner
