The pig of 31, an unfinished piece for Cubans who stand in line

Fin de año, cola

Havana Cuba. — If the government of President-designate Miguel Díaz-Canel could boast of any growth in the coming year, it would be scarcity, shortages, and corruption.

There has been an absence and shortage of food for more than three years. I don’t mean lobster and shrimp, but milk, butter, rice. Scarcity is increased by the diversion of resources, theft, resale, and other wrongs inherent to socialism.

Faced with this situation, and due to the high prices of individuals, the communist bureaucrats came up with the idea, amid populist euphoria, for the end of the yearsell a piece of pork per family below the market price, in order to alleviate the discomfort of the population.

The calculation of the officials was to allocate a pig for eight family nuclei, regardless of the number of members, and each band of the animal divided into four parts. It is not clear if they break the pig’s head or who gets it.

Each piece delivered, regardless of weight, would be charged at 250 pesos per pound. However, the promised pieces of pork for each family nucleus in Central Havana did not reach their destination. And that the neighbors only wanted, to paraphrase Nicolás Guillén, “a small piece, and not a colossal piece, a small piece”, which would allow them to blunt their teeth at their discreet New Year’s Eve dinner

The Manzanares market, in the ruins of the homonymous cinema, on Infanta and Carlos III, exploded like cafunga. Its administrator, William Casanova, left those who were in line without pork.

Similarly, the administrator of Oria, also in the Centro Habana municipality, transported the meat, apparently mistakenly, to the neighboring polyclinic. Then it was learned that the queue of patients at the dentist was not such. They were private butchers and deckhands who were waiting for their pieces to resell them on the black market.

Both administrators were removed from their positions, fined and are awaiting trial.

For her part, Carmen Pedroso, director of Commerce and Gastronomy in the municipality, washes her hands in the pork fat so that the problem slips away, and unlike Chacumbele, she floats and emerges in office, despite the sorrows and to come thunder from the adjoining municipality Cerro.

Unlike the Centro Habaneros who queued up to buy meat and at least smelled the pig’s tail, thousands of Santa Clara residents Concentrated in the parking lot of the Augusto Cesar Sandino stadium, they had to settle for the sweet smell of pepper spray, splendidly sprayed by the police before the avalanche of public and the tendency to disorder and backstabbing.

Meanwhile, in the distant lands of Cauto, in Bayamo, they continue, like the bald soprano, waiting for Godot. The slaughterhouse was turned into a gym. Pork, chicken and fish do not reach the Cuban Far East. Not even a small piece.
