In the mountains of northern Tolima is Murillo, a small municipality of about 5,000 inhabitants that has a peculiarity: it is the closest urban center to Nevado del Ruiz. Barely 12 kilometers separate the urban area from this volcano, whose activity maintains the attention of authorities and residents.
The proximity to the snow-capped mountain has not stopped life in this picturesque town. Although some villages maintain preventive alerts due to their location, the town center is outside the highest risk area. For this reason, tourism continues to grow and more and more travelers arrive in search of tranquility, unique landscapes and fresh air.
Murillo, known as the “pearl of northern Tolima,” has gained recognition as an ideal destination for ecotourism. Its mountains, its biodiversity and a tranquility that envelops you from the first moment explain why so many visitors include it on their route. A town elevated between clouds and tradition
With an altitude close to 2,950 meters above sea level, Murillo holds another title: it is the highest municipality in Tolima. This characteristic influences its climate, its green landscapes and the presence of natural hot springs that have become one of its greatest tourist attractions. Between the fog and the quiet streets, its architecture with coffee touches and colorful facades stand out like a perfect postcard.

It is said that we are about 3,000 meters above sea level,” he commented during his visit. For him, the place has a special charm: “Murillo, Tolima is a colorful and charming town.”

Murillo is also a starting point for those who want to explore the paramo ecosystems of the Los Nevados National Natural Park. From the town center, routes begin that lead along one of the most admired roads in the country, surrounded by hidden lagoons, centuries-old frailejones and landscapes that seem straight out of a documentary.
This route connects directly with Manizales, considered the most beautiful in the country and is one of the favorites among tourists and photographers looking for a trip full of nature. «This road connects Murillo-Tolima with the city of Manizales and is characterized by its impressive views. Along the route there are families who are even closer to the volcano,” said Kevin.
In this area, hiking, bird watching and guided tours have become increasingly popular activities. The calm of the moor and the breadth of the landscape make many visitors return to continue exploring.
Murillo, far from being just a town near an active volcano, is a destination full of identity. Its hot springs, its peasant culture and its mountains have conquered those who visit it. «You have to come to Murillo to admire all these natural attractions, but also those of the urban area. “It is a magical town, definitely,” said the YouTuber.
