The construction of the Manzana Payret tourist complex and the Pasaje hotel, a five-star category and under the direction of the GAESA business group, began in February of this year. When making the announcement of the works, in 2018, the Cuban authorities said that the project would respect this cinema, built in 1878 by the Catalan Joaquín Payret and one of the first to show films in Cuba.
After the start of the works was announced, an anonymous official source revealed to CubaNet The project was worth around 300 million dollars.
By that date, CubaNet interviewed several citizens who said they preferred to see the Payret duly restored, but maintaining the function for which it was conceived, since it is part of Havana’s cultural heritage, added to the fact that every day the Cuban people have fewer options for entertainment and culture.
