Through telephone communication, the distributors let their clients (kiosks and shops) know this Friday the 23rd that next December 31 will be the last paper edition of the capital media outlet El Observador.
According to reports, journalists from the media outlet thought that the closure would not be so soon, hinting that they were surprised.
The share package of El Observador was sold in May 2022, to Argentine businessmen, some also linked to media in their country (see following note).
The new owners of El Observador are close to the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle.
As will be recalled days ago, the management of El Observador, and also by phone call from Torre Ejecutiva, did not allow journalists from his team to publish the report on the spying on Lacalle’s ex-wife. Faced with the censorship of press freedom, journalists from the outlet chose to also publicize the report through their Twitter accounts.
