The National Action Party (PAN) yesterday modified its statutes for the “total opening” of its candidacies to citizen profiles, a week after leader Jorge Romero opened the door to businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego to be presidential standard bearer in 2030.

The changes were made amid warnings from militants that failing to do so would put the existence of the political institute at risk.

Before the start of two assemblies, they also highlighted the ground that the PAN has been losing in recent years, among others by not approaching society.

Luis Felipe Bravo Mena, former president of the party, acknowledged that one of the reasons for the decline is that “over time it has been closed to citizen participation,” so if we do not manage to get closer to supporters “we are dead.”

The former head of the National Water Commission, José Luis Luege, also admitted that the blue and white “He has completely distanced himself” from the citizens, and if he does not correct that error, “we are lost. If a strong change is not visualized in the first half of 2026, the party has no chance in 2027, and we would be talking about a very serious issue,” he said.

Yesterday, Jorge Romero emphasized to his coreligionists the importance of opening the candidacies blue and white to “the best profiles”, even without prior militancy, which breaks with the PAN tradition of appointing its standard-bearers through closed groups.

“We not only open the doors to citizens, we take action for Mexico. With a proposal and love for our country, we offer families an alternative that defends freedom and fights for a future of opportunities,” said the licensed deputy at the Expo Santa Fe México, which did not register a full house.

It also established that the statutes would establish as a mandatory rule the alternation of gender in the presidencies of all National Action committees, as well as making digital affiliations through an application.

“We are going fully into the streets of our country, I anticipate that the next great project of this leadership will be the construction of the largest land army and digital army that National Action has ever had. We will recruit 150 thousand people throughout the country, so that every day of every week, of every month, we are knocking on doors and hearts, not only with three months left until the election,” he said.

Statuary reforms

He explained that the PAN statutory reforms would be around 100. They include the possibility of holding primary elections open to citizens to define candidates and the “3 out of 3” principle was incorporated, so that no sexual offender, alimony debtor or person sentenced for family violence can register as an applicant or be a leader of the political institute.

On Saturday, November 22, in an interview with The CountryJorge Romero pointed out that by 2030 “I see Ricardo Salinas Pliego with perfect clarity. If he is encouraged, advances and we see that he is growing in spirit, of course we do not rule him out.”
