The Ombudsman expressed its total rejection of the statements of the Prime Minister, Aníbal Torres, towards the journalist Sol Carreño, to whom he told that “he takes advantage of his little knowledge to harm the Government”.
The president of the Council of Ministers did not take well a report issued by “Fourth power” on unfinished road works in the region Huancavelica.
“I ask you: is it the only road that is not paved? All of Peru (is like this), that is the reality. You have to pave, but it’s not done overnight. peter castle says: ‘Let the road be built’ and the road has already been paved?”, Torres Vásquez said at a press conference.
However, it was his following statements that caused a wave of indignation, as he lashed out at the journalist criticizing her role in society as a woman and mother of a family.
After this incident, the Ombudsman supported Sol Carreno and to the press when specifying that no government authority can camouflage misogynistic comments by disagreeing with the media, especially towards the women of the press.
“We reiterate that aggravation of confrontations between institutions and powers of the State, and criticism of the press, should not motivate discriminatory expressions and sexist against women by any official. Therefore, we reject statements by the President of the Council of Ministers, Hannibal Torres, said the institution.
The autonomous body described the words of the lawyer as incompatible with the democratic system because they are “government spokespersons” who have the responsibility to create and implement public policies so that the female population is not a victim of these offenses.
“The current central government established as a 2021-2026 State policy to guarantee the participation of women in public spaces. Also, through the National Gender Equality Policy has committed to preventing discriminatory speeches against women”, added the Ombudsman.
