The Ombudsman and the United Nations High Commissioner carry out inspections in communities receiving migrants

An inspection to verify the human rights conditions of migrants in the San Vicente and Lajas Blancas Migrant Reception Stations (ERM) was carried out by the Ombudsman since the beginning of the week for 4 days, together with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner Nations (OACNUDH) and the National Mechanism for the Prevention of Torture (MNPT).

The Deputy Ombudsman, Clarissa Martínez, traveled from Puerto Limón for four hours by canoe upriver to the community of Canaán Membrillo and confirmed the need of the locals for water, public services and health.

The Ombudsman delivered ensures, clothing to women, children and men who as migrants must be registered by the National Border Service (SENAFRONT) and the National Migration Service.

This visit seeks to supervise and learn about the management given to migrants when they arrive in Panamanian territory, once they cross the ‘Darién Gap’ and monitor communities in transit such as Canaán Membrillo, Martínez assured.

He stressed that migrants have used a new point of entry into the country, which is Puerto Limón and the community of Alto Buenos Aires.
