A record number of black, Hispanic, Asian and native American The Hill.
The Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP) of Rutgers University discovered that the number of state legislators has followed a national upward trend, with more than one third of state legislative seats occupied by women, the largest segment ever registered and more than five times the female representation in 1971.
Women represent just over half of the American population, according to census data.
CAWP analysis also revealed an unprecedented diversity among chosen women. Almost 400 black women are in positions in state legislatures this year, an increase with respect to the previous record of 386, established last year; 214 Latin state legislators exceed the record last year of 192; The 107 Asian-American legislators or the Pacific Islands have broken the 100 record established in 2023; And women who identify as American natives, Native Alaska or Hawaiian native, occupy 44 seats, in front of the 3623 record.
When break -in -the -real and ethnic groups, only white women occupy less state legislative seats in 2025 than in 2024, according to the CAWP.
The figures include women who identify with more than one racial or ethnic group, so some have been counted several times in different categories.
“It is encouraging to see a growing diversity among women who occupy state legislative seats, but the broader context tells a different story,” said CAWP director, Debbie Walsh, in a statement.

“The 2024 elections only produced modest increases in the number of women who occupy state legislative seats, and women of all origins continue to be significantly underrepresented in state legislatures.”
“Women now occupy only one third of these seats, a significant improvement with respect to 11 % they occupied 45 years ago, but still far from 50 %,” he added.
Almost two thirds, or 1 580, of the 2 469 state legislators of the country are democrats, while 867 are republican and five are independent. Seventeen do not have partisan affiliation, since the elections for the Nebraska Unicameral Legislature are non -partisan.
The Nevada Legislature, the third smallest bicameral state legislature, with only 63 members in the House of Representatives and the Senate, has the greatest female representation, with almost 62 %, according to the report.
For the first time in history, women constitute the majority (51 of 100 members) of state state legislators this year. West Virginia has the smallest female block, with just under 12 %, or 16 of the 134 members of the state legislature.
