The number of transmigrants between Honduras and Nicaragua continues to grow

Faced with the sudden increase in irregular migrants from different countries seeking to cross Honduras en route to the US, humanitarian agencies are implementing care plans in the border area between Honduras and Nicaragua.

In its latest report, the Honduran National Migration Institute said that between January 1 and April 24, 2022 alone, some 24,230 people from Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and Haiti entered irregularly.

Given the high migratory transit, humanitarian institutions such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Red Cross have urged the Honduran government to declare “a migration emergency” and are implementing care plans.

The IOM announced that it has been mobilized to the border that divides Honduras with Nicaragua to monitor the situation and deliver basic supplies such as water and food products to strengthen the response capacity of shelters in the area.

Jorge Peraza, head of the IOM Mission in the area, said that “the presence of authorities and counterparts in this area is vital” above all to guarantee that the rights of migrants who use the different shelters are respected.

For her part, Kenia Zerón, a defender of the rights of migrants and assists those who arrive daily at the shelters, told the voice of america that they are vigilant to avoid “violations of their rights” since in many cases the inhabitants of the area treat migrants with contempt.
