AREQUIPA, Peru – The number of deaths after this Friday’s massive accident in Camagüey rose to three, while the same number of patients remain reported to be critical, life-threatening, and one serious.
As confirmed to the state press Dr. Rodolfo Emilio Domínguez Rosabal, director of the Provincial University Hospital in Camagüey, the deceased are named Damaris Reyes Rodríguez, 49 years old, from Bayamo, and Georgina Barrero Gutiérrez, 49 years old, both from the province of Granma and who died in the care center
For his part, Julio Idóneo Torres Reyes, from Havana, aged 56, lost his life at the scene of the tragic event.
In the aforementioned health institution, 52 injured people remain under care and surveillance, the doctor said.
On the other hand, of the seven children who were initially treated at the provincial hospital, five are already discharged, and two remain in the intermediate ward of the Eduardo Agramonte Piña Pediatric Hospital, but without danger to their lives.
The massive accident occurred after the collision of the two Yutong buses, at the intersection of the northern ring road of the main city and the Central Highway via West, after 7:00 pm on Friday, due to violation of the stop sign of one of the drivers.
One of those vehicles, Transmetro brand, under the leasing system, left the Songo-La Maya terminal, in Santiago de Cuba, and the other, belonging to the Military Construction Company, transported personnel from that sector.
This incident adds to a worrying trend in Cuba, where traffic accidents have shown an increase in recent years. According to official data, between January and October 2023, 6,965 traffic accidents were recorded, an increase of 12.8% compared to the same period in 2022. These accidents resulted in 562 deaths and 5,643 injuries.
The province of Camagüey has not been immune to this problem. On January 2, a tragic traffic accident It occurred around 10 in the morning at kilometer 71 of the highway towards Santa Cruz del Sur. In the incident, one person, identified as Ramón Chávez Águila, lost his life and 63 were injured.
The main causes of these accidents in the country include excessive speed, the poor technical condition of vehicles and roads, and lack of attention to vehicle control.
