The North American Summit will be very different

Andrés Manuel López Obrador boycotted the Summit of the Americas last June in Los Angeles, California, because they did not let him arrive accompanied by the dictators of Latin America.

But now that in January he will receive the President of the United States, Joe Biden, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, in Mexico, the Mexican President will be accompanied by that agenda promoted by his regime in which he believes that democracy does not matter in a process of continental integration.

After the letter that López Obrador sent to Joe Biden this Monday, surely, in the White House and at the Canadian government headquarters, they must ask themselves what is the purpose of traveling to Mexico to listen to the same monologue that they already know from Mexican president.

The answer must be that, beyond their people and the duration of their mandates, there is a trilateral relationship to maintain, even in these moments in which the Mexican regime imposes difficulties in trade, the environment and even in the internal democratic life.

There is a word that the López Obrador regime is beginning to use with unusual frequency in all its communications with the United States and that is sovereignty. Sure, it has been one of his favorite commonplaces, for example with the breach of the trade agreement due to his statist vision of the energy sector, but he increasingly insists on that concept.

It seems that the defense of sovereignty will be very close at hand when he eventually carries out the legislative coup against democracy by minimizing electoral institutions and exposing to the world that free elections in Mexico are in real danger. .

He also includes in the letter to Biden that of the self-determination of the peoples, the problem is that he writes it in the letter to Biden the same day that he meddles without masks in the internal affairs of Peru’s politics.

The last time the three leaders met, in November of last year at the White House, the result was a catalog of many good intentions, but all focused on North America.

Now López Obrador wants to put his dream of American integration at the center, regardless of whether the partners are dictatorships or not.

What is clear is that during the next four weeks prior to the North American summit in Mexico it will be necessary to see the evolution of at least two basic issues.

The first, if the Mexican regime really has an interest in correcting its grievances in energy matters that have caused damage to companies in that sector of the two northern countries or if after the summit the T-MEC panel is installed and the foreseeable sanctions.

The second issue that could generate a reaction from Biden and Trudeau is the package of legal changes that López Obrador has eventually achieved to take over the elections and their results. It is not something that they would pass so easily in front of López Obrador.

So, the January meeting of the three North American leaders looks to be very different from what we have seen before.
