The Nicaraguan Naval Force recommends shelter from the tropical wave in the Caribbean

The Nicaraguan Naval Force recommended this Wednesday to the captains of the vessels in the Caribbean Sea that they take security measures, in the face of a tropical wave located off the coast of Venezuela, and that could strengthen and impact the Central American country in the coming days.

“Vessels that are already fishing are recommended to take all security measures and, if necessary, move to a safe port, in order to avoid events to be regretted,” the Nicaraguan Naval Force warned in an informative note. .

According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC, for its acronym in English) of the United States, the tropical wave was located this morning in the minor islands of the Caribbean, and was moving west at about 24 kilometers per hour.

The trajectory projected by the NHC indicated a displacement towards the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua in the remainder of the week.

As of Wednesday morning, the phenomenon had a 60% chance of developing in the next two days, and an 80% chance of strengthening in the next five days, according to the NHC.

The Nicaraguan Naval Force warned of showers and storms in the Nicaraguan territory of the Caribbean Sea, which borders Colombia.

“Because of the aforementioned, they are informed that they must remain vigilant in monitoring this phenomenon, take into account the necessary security measures to safeguard life and protect the vessels,” said the military authority.

The impact of hurricanes on the east coast of Nicaragua is common, since the Central American country has a coastline of more than 500 kilometers facing the Caribbean Sea, one of the most cyclonic areas in the world.

In November 2020, Nicaragua was hit by hurricanes Eta and Iota, which hit the Caribbean coast with category 4 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, with a maximum of 5, with a difference of 13 days between them.

Other hurricanes that caused devastation and death in the Nicaraguan Caribbean were Joan (1988) and Félix in 2007, as well as Mitch in 1998, the latter without impacting the continental territory.

Last July, storm Bonnie hit Nicaragua and left only material damage.
