The NGO Prisoners Defenders figure in 1,150 the number of political prisoners in Cuba in January

Madrid/The NGO Prisoners Defenders (PD) estimated on Thursday in 1,150 the number of prisoners for political reasons in Cuba at the end of January, 11 less than those reported in its previous monthly report.

The organization, based in Madrid, maintains in its list of 201 released in January, arguing that their convictions have not been extinguished and still in practice in conditioned freedom.

These people were released in January after the decision of the Government of Cuba to get 553 inmates sentenced for “various crimes” out of prison, after Washington excluded Havana from the list of countries that promote terrorism.

The PD report adds five new names to the list and points out that 16 came out after the full compliance of the sanction or measure imposed.

The organization, one of the main references in the Registry of prisoners for political reasons in Cuba, indicated that in its list there are 721 people “with serious medical pathologies, having confirmed that the cause is due to the lack of food, the abuse, the abuse, the repressive environment and their aggravation due to such lack of adequate medical care. ”

He added that he verified “70 political prisoners with serious mental health disorders without adequate medical or psychiatric treatment.”

He also explained that 33 minors are still on the list, of which 29 comply with a sentence and four are being criminally processed “with precautionary measures without any judicial protection.” The minimum criminal age in Cuba is 16 years.

Prisoners Defenders denounced that in their registry there are 222 people accused of sedition, when in most cases they participated in peaceful protests, and added that 219 “have already been sentenced to an average of ten years of deprivation of liberty each” (between They 15 minors).

The NGO also highlighted the treatment suffered by the 123 women included in their list, including two trans that are imprisoned among men.

“Cuba has totaled 1,801 political prisoners present in their prisons” since July 2021, when the greatest anti -government protests in decades on the island were recorded, according to the NGO.
