CDMX, Mexico.- As had already happened in 2016, the renowned American newspaper The New York Times (TNYT) placed Cuba among the 52 destinations they recommend visiting in 2023.
The suggestion comes at a time of severe crisis for the Cuban economy that has not been able to stand out The tourism after the pandemic.
Cuba ranks 27th in the aforementioned list that also suggests other destinations such as Canada, Italy, Spain. TNYT highlights in the case of the Caribbean country “the culture, gastronomy and natural beauties” of the island. He also states that another reason to know is the character and friendliness of Cubans, and good music. These two variables give rise to “an omnipresent and joyous soundtrack that resonates in its cities and towns”.
The American newspaper highlights the “tempting” proximity of Cuba to the United States, as another reason for traveling to the island.

The text published yesterday describes Cuba as a paradise of beautiful white sand beaches, valleys rich in tobacco and happy inhabitants. However, they do not mention the lack of food and medicine, the deficient infrastructure of the health system, the blackouts, the political repression and that the island has been governed for 64 years by a dictatorship.
The New York Times limits itself to reproducing the same stereotyped discourse that Cuban tourism agencies advertise, without really telling how people live in the country.
As expected, the propaganda media of the dictatorship have echoed the article and have used it to advertise
In addition to Cubadebate and the Prensa Latina agency, the Twitter profiles of the Ministry of the Interior, De Zurda Team, as well as Cuban ambassadors abroad immediately replicated the promotion.
Culture, gastronomy, natural beauties, the generosity of the Cuban people, their music and the “tempting” proximity to the US
are qualities that The New York Times took into account so that #Cuba is now ranked 27th on a list of 52 places to which it recommends traveling in 2023. pic.twitter.com/B9zOUOuxUg— MININT_CUBA (@minint_cuba) January 14, 2023
It is not the first time that TNYT recommends traveling to Cuba. In 2016, in the midst of the thaw between the two countries, the Valley of Viñales in Pinar del Río, ranked 10th among 52 destinations for travelers.
This publication does not seem casual just now that bilateral relations have taken another course, more similar to the one initiated by Barack Obama than to the policy of Donald Trump.
