The National Consumer Service (Sernac) has taken an important step in protecting the privacy of gym users in Chile by requesting various chains to limit the use of cell phones in these establishments. This measure seeks to combat the recording without consent of people who are going to train, a practice that has increased on social networks where these images are used for inappropriate purposes.
All the gyms They must present within 10 days the protocols they have in place to avoid exposing the privacy of their clients. This request from Sernac is based on the Consumer Law, which guarantees the safety and protection of the mental health of consumers, as well as the protection of their personal data, including their image.
The initiative arises out of concern about the recent trend of social media users uploading videos of people in the gym without their consent, mocking or sexualizing them. This situation violates the fundamental rights of privacy and respect for the dignity of people, which is why it is necessary to establish effective measures to prevent this type of situation.
The National Director of SernacAndrés Herrera, has highlighted the institution’s interest in coordinating with gym service providers to guarantee the essential rights of its clients.
This measure of Sernac seeks to protect the integrity and privacy of those who go to these establishments in search of improving their health and well-being, without fear of being publicly exposed on social networks.
