By instruction of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) authorized the constitution of the majority state-owned company Grupo Aeroportuario Turístico Mexicano, which will be able to carry out all the necessary actions to manage, operate, exploit and build (in the process of expansion and/or improvements) the International Airport of Tepic, Nayarit, currently under the baton of Airports and Auxiliary Services (ASA).
The main argument for separating the operation of said air terminal is that: the Riviera Nayarita is one of the regions with the greatest potential for tourism growth and investment; in such a way that it is seen as the new tourism receiving market from various poles at a national and international level, which, in turn, generates the need to provide it with the necessary infrastructure, in accordance with its development potential.
To fulfill its functions, the new company “will provide airport, complementary, commercial, auxiliary and special services, by itself or through various legal figures of public and private law, as well as obtain concessions, permits, licenses and any type of government authorizations and, in general, will execute all legal acts that are essential or convenient for the management and development of the company”, was reported this Thursday in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).
The new group will have an initial amount of state participation of one million pesos, of which 990,000 will come from ASA, in its capacity as majority shareholder, and 10,000 of budgetary origin from the Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), as a minority shareholder.
“It should be noted that ASA will continue to carry out the necessary legal and administrative actions to provide support to the Tepic International Airport, Nayarit, for which it will allocate economic, administrative and human resources for this purpose. The foregoing, as Grupo Aeroportuario Turístico Mexicano has the financial, legal and administrative resources that allow it to manage, operate, exploit and build (in the process of expansion and/or improvements) the aforementioned aerodrome”, it was specified.
* The Presidential Push
From January to August, the Tepic airport was the sixth, of the 19 under the management of ASA, with the largest number of national passengers: 135,467, with operations of Volaris and Aeromar, while in international passengers it only registered the movement of 36 passengers during August, so far this year.
Due to its location, it will be strategic to connect with eventual tourists who visit the new ecological park of the Islas Marías.
As part of the context of the creation of the Mexican Tourist Airport Group, it was detailed in the DOF: “On September 12 and 21, 2021, Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador, President of the United Mexican States, during various inaugural protocol acts, instructed to expand and modernize the Tepic aerodrome, Nayarit, to make it an international airport, which promotes the progress of the state capital, so that “not everything stays in the south”, but that the center of said city is also served federal entity.
At that time, the President expressed his desire to improve the airport infrastructure “so that tourists don’t have to leave only through Vallarta, but rather have this option that goes hand in hand with the development of the north of the coastal zone, of the north of Nayarit, to have an international airport here in Tepic to give more progress to the state capital”.
Information from the Riviera Nayarit Tourism Development and Promotion Office indicates that it is a fashionable beach destination in Mexico, with more than 300 km of virgin coastline, 23 micro-destinations, from traditional seaside towns, steep mountains, nature sanctuaries, golden sand, beaches surrounded by palm trees, even all-inclusive hotels and luxury resorts.
