Security is part of our daily lives. It is what allows us to move calmly, talk on a corner without fear, go out to work at dawn or return home without fear. Therefore, when we talk about transforming the National Policewe are not talking about just anything, but about a process that directly affects the way we live.
Under this premise, the transformation that the institution has initiated to become a more prepared, closer and more aware body of its role within society does not go unnoticed.
Being the most important link, the change process has begun with the preparation of the agents. To make this possible, the process began with a selection of approximately 1,150 police officerscarefully selected after several tests, including psychological ones.
Before taking to the streets, these agents went through a preparation process focused on respect for human rights and the dignified treatment of citizens. The idea is simple: train police officers who reflect the type of citizenship we want. Agents must be a reflection of our society.
During the last graduation, the Minister of the Interior and Police, Faride Raful, expressed it as follows: “we will continue to strengthen preventive work with more agents throughout the territory and with a renewed educational profile, similar to the society we want to build.”
What began with a group of 1,150 agents, today has more than 6,500 police officers trained and equipped to work with professionalism. Behind every number is a person who made the commitment to serve with integrity and who now has clearer tools to do so.
But training is only one part. The form of patrolling is also changing. The new model combines technology, data analysis and community meetings. Uniform cameras, heat maps and analysis centers make it possible to better understand what is happening in each area. Police officers no longer walk the streets blindly, they do so with information that guides their work.
And to make it comprehensive, the transformation has also paid attention to something that often goes unnoticed: the sense of belonging. No one takes care of what they do not feel is theirs, and that is why work has been done on the behavior, image and tools of the agents. The objective is for each police officer to see and feel part of a modern, professional institution at the service of the community.
In addition, agents are evaluated with clear indicators, operational goals and action protocols. This offers them a guide for action and, at the same time, reinforces transparency and trust between the institution and citizens.
The police transformation It is not a perfect or immediate process, but it is a firm step towards the country we want to build: a country where security is not a privilege, but a right. Where people can move without fear and where the relationship between citizens and the Police is based on mutual respect.
That is the horizon that is being built. And it is a job that is done every day, in the streets, in the neighborhoods and in every encounter between an agent and a citizen.
