The Nevado del Ruiz continues to ‘throw’ ash and gases, but its level of volcanic activity remains yellow

Nevado del Ruiz ceniza y gases

The column of gases and steam reached a maximum height of 2333 m measured on the top of the volcano, on April 24.

Since August 2021, the Nevado del Ruiz has maintained its level of volcanic activity in yellow, due to the seismic increase that has increased gas and ash emissions.

Colombia News.

In the last activity and surveillance bulletin, which reports the week of April 19 to 25, it is recorded that the Nevado del Ruiz continues with moderate volcanic activity and at a yellow level.

“It continues to present instability in its behavior,” reported the Colombian Geological Service.

This is how some citizens have evidenced the output of smoke from the volcano in the last week.

The constant fall of ash in various sectors of the city of Manizales and the municipality of Villamaría, “is related to gas and ash emissions” from the volcano.

For example, on April 26, there were “seismic signals of a moderate energy level, associated with the movement of fluids inside the volcanic ducts.”

For this reason, “the possibility of greater activity than that registered in recent years cannot be ruled out,” the SGC warned.

The volcano continues to emit water vapor and gases, mainly Sulfur Dioxide (SO2). During that last measured week, “thermal anomalies were reported in the
volcano”.

The column of gases and steam reached a maximum height of 2333 m measured on the top of the volcano, on April 24.

While the seismicity associated with rock fracturing increased in the number of earthquakes and in the seismic energy released, in relation to the previous week, the fluid dynamics inside the volcanic conduits decreased.

In November 2021, from the coordination of the Manizales Volcanological and Seismological Observatory, it had been reported that the volcano is “sick, but not in critical condition.” For this reason, they were accompanying the communities with action plans in the event of a possible eruption.

From the Caldas Risk Management Headquarters, it was also reported that relief agencies and municipal committees are on the lookout. And they remain vigilant.
