Martha was the living image of desolation after the Norwegian referee Espen Eskas decided yesterday to expel the legendary footballer from Brazil38, from the pitch after a hard tackle on Olga Carmona just before half-time in the Brazil-Spain match that earned her a straight red card and which almost certainly brings to an end (she said she dreams of playing in the 2027 World Cup in Brazil) her international career.
Brazil qualified for the quarter-finals and Marta, suspended, will not be there. But if the Canarinha manage to eliminate France, Marta could still have a chance of participating in the hypothetical semi-finals. Everything remains to be seen, but for now the Brazilian number 10 has been subject to much criticism. Although there are many who regret such an outcome for her, many others do not forgive her for the image she offers of Brazil.
