Colombia advances in its roadmap towards hydrogen with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ministry of Mines and Energy and the Ministry of Transport of Colombia with the Port of Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The port, which is looking for hydrogen exporting countrieswill allow Colombia to advance in the study of the generation of this type of energy, as well as learn from the experiences of the port on its transport logistics in order to market it.
According to the Memorandum, the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Transport and the Port of Rotterdam will establish dialogues to create a corridor for the export and import of hydrogen between Colombia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

“The development of zero and low-emission hydrogen will allow Colombia to reduce between 2.5 and 3 million tons of CO2 in the next decade, as well as position itself as a potential exporter of this energy, necessary to decarbonize industries intensive in the use of energy and meet the goals of COP21”, said the Minister of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa.
This agreement between the Port of Rotterdam and Colombia will also allow the country to accelerate the development of its capabilities and thus position itself in the global hydrogen market. All this, through new cooperation agreements to access new technologies, project financing and the opening of export routes for hydrogen and its derivatives.

According to Rene van der Plas, International Director of the Port of Rotterdam, cooperation with Colombia offers opportunities. “Colombia is well positioned for green hydrogen production. With this Memorandum of Understanding we want to stimulate cooperation between the Netherlands and Colombia, also allow companies from both countries to learn from each other and do business together”. The Dutch city of Rotterdam has the largest port in Europe, this port has the goal of being the European center in the field of hydrogen within a few years.
For his part, the Minister of Transport, Angela Maria Orozco celebrated the signing of the Memorandum, noting that the country will benefit from this instrument thanks to the fact that the development of hydrogen as a zero-emission alternative contributes to the energy transition of the transport sector, in view of the international commitments acquired by Colombia in the face of climate change .

The official added that “access to the knowledge and experience of the port of Rotterdam, one of the largest in Europe, a leader in port development and management, will be a very valuable input for the formulation of the Port Policy carried out by the Ministry, which is oriented towards the modernization of the institutional framework and the strengthening of safe and sustainable intermodal transport”.
