Delgado began his speech by pointing out the difficulties that the country faced in recent years, but highlighted the success of the policies implemented. «Despite the difficulties we had – you know it: the pandemic, the drought, you already saw it –, today we have, we are going to end the government with 100,000 more genuine jobs, not public officials, with half the inflation. than in 2019, with the highest real salary in 49 years in Uruguay, with a record of people working,” he stated.
The candidate stated that these achievements were accompanied by a decrease in informal work and a record of investments. In this sense, he indicated: “All of this, with a decrease in informality and with a record of investment, is what we did.”
Regarding his plan for the next government, Delgado announced that his focus will be on reducing the costs of living for Uruguayans, both in terms of consumption and production. «What are we going to do in our next government? Go for a second level of transformations, which is to lower the cost of living for Uruguayans, both to live and to produce, in issues such as food, personal hygiene, fuel and technology,” he explained.
In terms of security, the current Secretary of the Presidency emphasized the reduction of crimes during the current administration. He recalled that “2018 and 2019 were the most violent years in Uruguay, with a record of crimes,” and stated that since then “theft decreased by 42%, theft by 22%, and rustling by 57%.” However, he acknowledged that in the case of homicides, the decrease has been “very slight.”
Finally, Delgado was firm in his stance towards crime, ensuring that his government will have no qualms about taking forceful measures: “The candidate for the presidency of the Republic said that crime will be repressed. “We have no prejudice with repression,” he said. He also criticized the opposition for its approach to this issue, mentioning that “the opposition has a romantic view of crime, where sometimes the victim ends up being the criminal, when in reality it is always society.”
