The National Guard will act with integrity with transfer to the Sedena, says AMLO

The president said that the intention of having the National Guard as part of the Sedena is to protect it.

“If it becomes a branch of the Ministry of Defense, just like the Army and the Air Force, we have the guarantee that it will remain and continue to act with integrity,” he said.

National Guard loses civilian character

After almost 16 hours of discussion, the Chamber of Deputies approved with 362 votes in favor of Morena and allies that the National Guard be under the command of the Secretariat of National Defense, with this, its civil character was suppressed with which the institution was born.

The constitutional reform establishes that the National Guard will be of a permanent nature, made up of personnel of military origin and with police training, and will be dependent on the Sedena to execute the National Public Security Strategy. The President of the Republic will have the power to appoint the commander of the National Guard, but at the proposal of the Secretary of National Defense.

Commenting on the approval of the initiative he sent last February – after several previous attempts to assign the Guard to the Sedena – the president assured that with this transfer he guarantees that the efforts to strengthen the corporation will not go down the drain.

“This will mean that all the effort we have made to create the National Guard in five years, to create an institution that already has the support of the majority of the people, that all this effort is not thrown overboard with the passage of time, that this is not destroyed, that what was suffered with the Federal Police that began with (Ernesto) Zedillo and was managed by García Luna and became corrupt does not happen again,” he stressed.
